Flood Mitigation with Adaptive Real-Time Stormwater Control

By integrating cloud-based software, sensors and flow controls in the field, and the weather forecast, adaptive control systems deliver flood risk mitigation, water quality improvement, operational insights, and resilience to communities. This presentation will introduce adaptive controls and discuss the process and challenges of adopting the technology. Results from the use of adaptive controls in Ormond Beach, FL, during two storms will be presented.

Becoming Sea Level Wise: City of Virginia Beach Resiliency Planning to Adapt to Rising Seas

Virginia Beach is among the top ten cities in the country at risk from sea level rise. In 2015, Virginia Beach launched the Comprehensive Sea Level Rise and Recurrent Flooding Capital Improvement Program, which is now known as Sea Level Wise. This session will discuss the effort and its aim to produce information and strategies that enable Virginia Beach to establish long-term resilience to sea level rise and associated recurrent flooding.

Kinnickinnic River at Jackson Park

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is partnering with Milwaukee County Parks and others to make improvements along the Kinnickinnic River and within Jackson Park as part of the larger 2017 Kinnickinnic River Watershed Flood Management Plan. Goals include flood risk reduction; improved public safety; improved riparian and aquatic habitats; enhanced stream aesthetics; and robust community collaboration. The team, led by designer HNTB, will discuss the project steps taken from planning to preliminary engineering. Design completion is planned in 2022 with construction to follow.
