The hybrid LID/BMP treatment system introduces low impact design elements into an industrial setting. The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) conducted a research, development, testing, and evaluation project of a new metals focused stormwater treatment device. The system is comprised of four major components to meet stringent NPDES permit limits, minimize maintenance, and extend the systems life. System testing and evaluation occurred in Southern California from November 2018 through May 2019.

Through testing, the system has shown extremely high copper and zinc removal efficiencies The combination of a LID biofilter and a dual-media filter BMP represent a technological advancement and was designed to meet increasingly stringent industrial stormwater effluent benchmarks for copper and zinc which are as low as 2.9 µg/L and 90 µg/L, respectively. The hybrid LID/BMP treatment system also meets effluent benchmarks for other pollutants while not exporting other potentially regulated pollutants.
