Many communities struggle to implement green infrastructure because of its perceived design complexity, high implementation cost, and time expenditure. This presentation highlights “Tactical Green Infrastructure” as a new award-winning design-build methodology that strategically identifies and implements simple, low-cost, and highly-effective stormwater projects in a short amount of time.
The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the audience to the principles, process, and successful examples of Tactical Green Infrastructure. Specifically, the author will introduce a unique public-private-academic program of Tactical Green Infrastructure called the California Student Leadership in Green Infrastructure. Formed in 2015, the California Student Leadership in Green Infrastructure is a group of inter-disciplinary students who work alongside design professionals to design, build, research, and advocate for simple and cost-effective green infrastructure projects throughout the west coast region- starting with university campuses as a canvas. This highly interactive and grassroots design and implementation process helps provide hands-on experience for students and educates the general public on the basic principles of green infrastructure and helps educate, train, and inspire the next generation of stormwater design professionals.
The California Student Leadership in Green Infrastructure program has completed several Tactical Green Infrastructure retrofit projects and has now expanded this student-practitioner model to multiple universities throughout the west coast region. The rapid success and award-winning recognition of Tactical Green Infrastructure has quickly led to working with various non-profit and public agencies to create a potential regional and national Tactical Green Infrastructure program. This education session will give attendees a new perspective on how green infrastructure can be quickly inserted into the built environment. After this session, attendees will have been given not only the tools to apply Tactical Green Infrastructure, but also the inspiration to do so. Ultimately, the purpose of this session is to get design practitioners, students, non-profits, and public agencies the foundation to implement Tactical Green Infrastructure at a widespread level.
