Facilities that may not necessarily have been prone to major flooding from nearby water bodies or lack of adequate drainage systems may now be increasingly vulnerable because of the observed increases in frequency and magnitude of storm events. More intense storms may also result in substantial increases in runoff at the site itself because of the large facility footprints. Flooding often puts employee health and safety at risk and causes disruptions in operations or shutdowns and potential financial losses if these sites are not adequately protected. These facilities may be protected from flooding by incorporating mitigation measures. Implementation plans should consider potential phasing of engineering and construction based on protection of critical areas that need to remain operational during flooding and protection of existing utilities. Based on the site location an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) may be necessary for timely notification of employees and local emergency services in anticipation of flooding that will require the closure and evacuation of the site. This presentation will provide insight into how to make your large sites flood resilient.
