The recent Texas Department of Transportation (DOT) approval for the use of thermoplastic pipe in storm sewer and culvert applications will provide new opportunities for engineers and contractors in determining the correct conveyance for their project. The Texas DOT approval has numerous facets to assist engineers and contractors: design considerations for thermoplastic pipe in highway applications, longevity of thermoplastic pipe in critical infrastructure, the importance of open competition for storm sewer pipe allowing agencies and contractors flexibility, and increasing project safety. Thermoplastic pipe has successfully been deployed to manage stormwater under highways, airports, railroads and in municipalities for decades across the U.S.
