Osceola Creek plays a vital role in mitigating flooding in one of the city’s lowest-lying neighborhoods, an area that was heavily impacted by an extreme regional storm event on April 12, 2023. This presentation will outline the challenges and successes of a significant restoration project that spanned approximately 2,800 feet of the creek, east of I-95, between SW 32nd Place and Marina Mile Boulevard. In 2023, the City of Fort Lauderdale successfully petitioned the state for ownership, paving the way for restoration efforts. This presentation will provide insights into the complexities of multi-jurisdictional coordination, effective restoration strategies, and future initiatives aimed at strengthening stormwater management in Fort Lauderdale. The Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) is actively pursuing drainage projects to improve flow from the airport, and the restoration of the creek’s northern discharge area—located on private property—will need to be coordinated to fully realize the project’s benefits. The speakers will touch on various project efforts including sediment removal, sustainable practices, native plantings and more.
