SUMMARY:Tunnels – A sustainable solution for flood control
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, August 9\, 2023\nTime: 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT / 11:00 AM PT / 7:00 PM GMT\nDuration: 1 Hour\nCredits: 0.1 CEU / 1.0 PDH\nSponsors: Contech and Invisible Structures \nRegister Now \nLarge diameter tunnels have been successfully deployed for flood mitigation and water conveyance in North America. More and more owners are taking a step back when it comes to large water infrastructure projects that disrupt quality of life by causing surface interruptions\, and evaluating tunnels as an alternative. The costs and risks associated with tunneling has decreased over time with the development of specialized and highly effective construction equipment suitable for most ground conditions. Because tunnels are deep underground\, the surface space required for construction is limited and hence the disruption to the public. Tunnels are designed for 100-150 year service life\, but are known to well outperform the design life with routine inspection and maintenance. We will present case studies where successful implementation of tunnel projects has led to long term flood mitigation success in a sustainable manner. The webinar will provide an overview of the flood control tunnels\, how they work and provide case studies of such tunnels in Charleston\, SC and Dallas\, TX. \nSpeakers \n\n\n\nStephen O’Connell\nEast Region Heavy Civil Lead\, Black and Veatch \nStephen is East Region Heavy Civil Lead for Black & Veatch and the Project Manager for the City of Charleston’s deep stormwater tunnel system. His focus is planning and management of heavy civil projects for municipal and federal clients in the southeast. \n\n\n\nAswathy (Ash) Sivaram\nCoastal infrastructure Lead\, Black and Veatch \nAsh Sivaram is a tunnels and coastal infrastructure practice lead with Black & Veatch in Houston\, TX where she focuses on heavy civil projects for clients in the Gulf Coast. \n\nSponsored by:
